Petronas PFLNG DUA Project Commenced Production in 2021

April 12, 2024

The PETRONAS PFLNG DUA is a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility designed to extract and process natural gas from deepwater fields offshore Malaysia. It is the first FLNG plant in the world to operate at depths exceeding 1,000m, marking a major milestone in offshore energy production.

Located 140km offshore Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, in Block H of the South China Sea, PFLNG DUA extracts gas from the Rotan gas field at a depth of 1,500m. Originally owned by Murphy Oil (80%) and PETRONAS (20%), the field is now operated by PTTEP Sabah Oil (56%), with PT Pertamina (24%) and PETRONAS Carigali (20%) as stakeholders.

First discovered in 2007, the Rotan field saw its breakthrough when PETRONAS approved the final investment decision (FID) in 2014. The vessel was built in South Korea and began operations in February 2021, following a journey of 1,840 nautical miles to its current location.

PFLNG DUA is a non-propelled vessel designed to operate for 20 years without dry-docking. It has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes (Mt) of LNG and is equipped with advanced technologies like BASF’s OASE® gas treatment for acid gas removal and GE Oil & Gas (Baker Hughes) turbines for gas liquefaction.

The project involved multiple global contractors, including JGC, Samsung Heavy Industries, ABB, and SOFEC, to ensure seamless execution. With its highly efficient and innovative design, PFLNG DUA strengthens PETRONAS’ commitment to sustainable and cost-effective offshore gas production.
